Can Marijuana be Beneficial for North Las Vegas?

North Las Vegas is getting a noticeable boost in their economy because of the medical marijuana industry.

Currently the city has made almost $1.1 million on licensing from cultivators, production and dispensaries.

Currently, North Las Vegas is making it more affordable for cultivators to open facilities. In 2014, they passed an ordinance in conjunction with Apex Industrial Park that eliminates thousands of dollars in annual fees and caps the revenue fee at 2 percent for medical marijuana businesses.

North Las Vegas has been approved for 50 cultivation and more than 70 state provisional production licenses, according to December data from the Nevada Public and Behavioral Health Division. Of those, five have received cultivation licenses from the city, but none have received a production license from the city.

Medical marijuana use was approved in the state of Nevada in 2000, but it was not until 2013 that medical marijuana establishments were made legal. Some of the first medical marijuana facilities just barely opened last year.

In all, North Las Vegas has more licenses for cultivation centers than Las Vegas and Henderson. According to a report from the Public and Behavioral Health Division 15,238 people were medical marijuana cardholders as of February and 10,284 of these people were located in Clark County.
