How to Avoid Becoming a Statistic at Summer Festivals this Year like EDC

For the past 5 years, the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) has brought thousands of visitors and EDM fans from around the country to Las Vegas and this year is no exception.

According to Insomniac Productions 134,000 EDM fans worldwide joined each night of the three day event this year for the 19th year in a row. Although the festival is packed with great times, loud music and energetic people, it also had life-changing consequences for some.

Over the past EDC weekend the festival made headlines once again due to the high number of arrests, medical emergencies and two deaths. According to Las Vegas Police Department press releases, there were 26 felony narcotics-related arrests on the first night, 22 on the second night and 25 on the final evening. In addition, five DUI and other alcohol-related arrests were made throughout the weekend.

While many articles written about the occurrences of the event have focused on what steps should be taken to prevent this from happening in the future, there are many questions for those who now face the consequences of too fun at EDC potentially leaving a paper trail. So what should you keep in mind if you face criminal charges after attending a large-scale event, especially if you are outside of your home state?

[Include basic information of what someone should be aware of if they are arrested or were arrested in connection to a large-scale event. Numbered items are placeholder text].

  1. Remain Calm – Remember to remain calm and not to incriminate yourself.
  2. Remember- You’re likely not the only one going through the same situation, and the police will know that. You’re best option is to hire a lawyer.
  3. Hire a local lawyer – Be sure to hire a local lawyer, especially if you are from out-of-state. The law differs state by state, but so does the consequences. The consequences for having marijuana in your possession is going to be different in California than it is in Nevada, for example and a local lawyer will know how to use these laws to benefit you.
  4. Planning for the Future (If Necessary)- Depending on the severity of the charges against you and what your lawyer was able to do. if you are facing a future hearing or court date, especially if you are not from that area, be sure to stay on top of any paperwork that may be mailed to you and stay in close contact with your lawyerUnknown. Above everything else, be sure not to miss any important dates including any appearances in court you may need to make.
